New Releases for the Week of September 25, 2015 Lotsa good stuff…

Don Henley: Cass County

Don Henley: Cass County

first solo album in 15+ years. Cass County features collaborations with Miranda Lambert, Mick Jagger, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss and others. Henley was a member of the Eagles from 1971 until their original break up in 1980. He recorded four solo albums between 1982 and 2000 before the Eagles reconvened. Now that the band has concluded their touring commitments, Henley went back to his country and folk roots for Cass County, his first solo album since Inside Job was released in 2000. The album’s earthy feel is closer to the Eagles sound than his slickly produced albums of the ’80s and should appeal to fans of Henley’s back catalog.

Los Lobos: Gates of Gold

Los Lobos: Gates of Gold

Los Lobos, the pride of East LA, evoke a rich American saga in the tradition of Faulkner and Steinbeck. Check the haunting ‘Made to Break Your Heart’, the spicy ‘Poquito’ and the heartache in ‘Magdalena’. Los Lobos are a multiple Grammy Award–winning American rock band. Their music is influenced by rock ‘n’ roll, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, brown-eyed soul, and traditional music such as cumbia, boleros and norteños. They gained international stardom in 1987 when their cover version of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” topped the charts in the US, the UK and in several other countries.

The Dead Weather: Dodge and Burn

The Dead Weather: Dodge and Burn

Dodge and Burn features eight brand new songs, along with the four previously released tracks remixed and remastered. Alison Mosshart, Jack White, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence spent their rare and sporadic free moments over the past year recording together in Nashville. Thankfully the thick and heavy Dodge and Burn will satisfy your urges for the dark magic that is The Dead Weather for a very long time. Born as a one-off collaboration between friends and tour mates, The Dead Weather has since evolved into one of the most vital and provocative bands in contemporary rock ‘n’ roll.

Patty Griffin: Servant of Love

Patty Griffin: Servant of Love

Servant Of Love is the Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Patty Griffin’s tenth album, and the first to be released on her new self-owned imprint in conjunction with Thirty Tigers. It marks the third time she has collaborated with producer Craig Ross. In Servant of Love, Patty digs deep into folk and roots tradition with it’s grounding in the experience and rhythms of the everyday, but she also writes in the vein of another tradition, less often mined: the transcendentalism of writers like Emerson and Whitman. In the vernacular of folk tales, blues cants, and jazz exploration, Servant of Love creates of these seemingly disparate notions a larger narrative of the human place in nature, in society, and in time. Griffin brings her genius for character-driven storytelling to bear on this overarching narrative of mystery. The same transmigrated soul seems to inhabit the characters in these songs, all different, yet all speaking from the same source: the storyteller herself, of course, but also, the album suggests, a greater source, a mysterious source.

Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining

Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap:
The Silver Lining

On The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, Tony Bennett is joined by acclaimed jazz pianist Bill Charlap. This release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern, one of the 20th century’s most important American composers of musical theater and popular music. Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums). Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap’s life partner for close to 10 years.

Shawn Colvin: Uncovered

Shawn Colvin: Uncovered

Uncovered is full of soulful interpretations of songs written by (among others) Tom Waits, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Neil Finn and Robbie Robertson. Colvin and Eagles guitarist Don Henley (who produced Cover Girl) reteam to craft these compositions. Contains 12 songs previously recorded by some of the musical greats such as Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Gerry Raffert, Graham Nash, and Tammy Wynette to name a few.

Silversun Pickups: Better Nature

Silversun Pickups: Better Nature

Silversun Pickups is among the most dynamic and creative rock bands of the modern era, hailed far and wide for their inimitable merging of ethereal melodies and pure sonic force. Better Nature marks the debut release from Silversun Pickups’ own New Machine Recordings. Harmonious and intimate, high-flying and deeply personal, Better Nature is a revelatory manifestation of a great band entirely in touch with the muse and each other. Silversun Pickups have once again managed the tricky task of being completely contemporary while also full on forward thinking, now as ever, existing more than a few steps ahead of the curve.

New Order: Music Complete

New Order: Music Complete

The long awaited album will be New Order’s first full studio release since 2005’s Waiting For The Siren’s Call, and their debut for Mute. Music Complete finds the group revitalized, and where the group has previously pushed toward electronics or guitars, here the two are in balance. Music Complete also marks a return to the studio for Gillian Gilbert, this is her first album with New Order since 2001’s Get Ready. Music Complete is produced by New Order, except ‘Singularity’ and ‘Unlearn This Hatred’, both produced by Tom Rowlands, while ‘Superheated’ features additional production by Stuart Price. Long-term collaborator Peter Saville provides art direction.

Widespread Panic: Street Dogs

Widespread Panic: Street Dogs

Street Dogs marks the 2015 Vanguard debut for the veteran jam/rock legends, recorded live-in-the-studio with longtime collaborator John Keane. Since their inception in Athens, Georgia, in 1986, Widespread Panic has risen to elite status among American jam bands. Following in the steps of other Southern rock jam bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, they draw influences from the Southern rock, blues-rock, progressive rock, funk and hard rock genres. They are frequently compared to other jam band “road warriors” such as the Grateful Dead and Phish. Widely renowned for their live performances, as of 2013, they hold the record for number of sold-out performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Morrison, Colorado) at 42 and Philips Arena (Atlanta, Georgia) at 20.

Chvrches: Every Open Eye

Chvrches: Every Open Eye

Every Open Eye follows Chvrches debut album, The Bones of What We Believe (over 185K units sold). Sonically the album is their signature style, uniquely merging the organic with the electronic, an electronic-pop record with a heart. They spent the first half of 2015 recording the album. Chvrches are a Scottish electronic band, formed in 2011. The group consists of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, additional synthesizers, samplers), Iain Cook (synthesizers, guitar, bass, vocals), and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, samplers, vocals). They came fifth on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list of the most promising new music talent.

Fetty Wap: Fetty Wap

Fetty Wap: Fetty Wap

Kurt Vile: B'lieve I'm Goin Down

Kurt Vile: B’lieve I’m Goin Down

B’lieve I’m Goin Down… is Vile’s 6th album, and shows Kurt both deeply introspective and briskly self-assured. As longtime fan Kim Gordon wrote about the album: “Kurt does his own myth-making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, B’lieve I’m Goin Down… is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (“Valley of Ashes”) of woody honest strait forward talk Guthrie, and a Cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, body-less, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter up cycling.”

Peaches: Rub

Peaches: Rub

the fifth studio album from feminist electroclash musician and performance artist, Peaches. Rub features guest appearances from Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Simmone Jones and Feist. Peaches’ songs are noted for disregarding traditional gender norms, and for their use of sexually explicit lyrics. She plays her own instruments for her songs, programs her own electronic beats, and produces her own albums. Her songs have been featured in movies such as Mean Girls, Waiting…, Jackass Number Two, My Little Eye, Drive Angry, and Lost in Translation. Her music has also been featured on television shows such as Lost Girl, The L Word, Ugly Betty, South Park, 30 Rock, True Blood and has been used for the promotion of Dirt.

Andrea Zonn: Rise

Andrea Zonn: Rise

one of the most respected fiddle players and harmony vocalists in contemporary music, knows as well as anyone that the right players and the right chemistry are what elevates an album and serves the songs. On her second album as an artist, Andrea is supported by the illustrious musicians she usually accompanies: James Taylor, Vince Gill, and Keb’ Mo’, for starters. The 10 tracks on her 2015 record Rise, show Andrea digging into song craft with focus and newfound confidence. The results escape any neat genre descriptions- folk-rock suits as well as anything- but they’re heavy on groove, natural tones and spontaneous, transparent beauty. The blending of genres is perhaps due to the multi-faceted dream team she assembled in the studio, a group of musicians she’s work with over her career: Dobro star Jerry Douglas, Newgrass-founding mandolinist Sam Bush, former Newgrass vocalist and current Doobie Brother John Cowan, and multi-award winning musician Mac McAnally.

John Scofield: Past Present

John Scofield: Past Present

John Scofield updates his early-’90s quartet with drummer Bill Stewart, saxophonist Joe Lovano and bassist Larry Grenadier for his impulse! Debut, Past Present. For an artist equally adept at jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul and rock getting to the root of jazz means channeling the blues. Scofield describes “Past Present” as “futuristic blues”: he and Lovano craft unison melodies before separating then intertwining invigorating improvs.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A wise man was telling stories to me
About the places he had been to
And the things that he had seen

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song about the home of the brave
In this land here of the free
One time one night in America

A lady dressed in white with the man she loved
Standing along the side of their pickup truck
A shot rang out in the night
Just when everything seemed right
Another headline written down in America

The guy that lived next door in #305
Took the kids to the park and disappeared
About half past nine
Who will ever know
How much she loved them so
That dark night alone in America

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song about the home of the brave
In this land here of the free
One time one night in America

Four small boys playing ball in a parking lot
A preacher, a teacher, and the other became a cop
A car skidded into the rain
Making the last little one a saint
One more light goes out in America

A young girl tosses a coin in the wishing well
She hopes for a heaven while for her
There’s just this hell
She gave away her life
To become somebody’s wife
Another wish unanswered in America

People having so much faith
Die too soon while all the rest come late
We write a song that no one sings
On a cold black stone
Where a lasting peace will finally bring

The sunlight plays upon my windowpane
I wake up to a world that’s still the same
My father said to be strong
And that a good man could never do wrong
In a dream I had last night in America

A wise man was telling storie to me
About the places he had been to
And the things that he had seen

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song about the home of the brave
In this land here of the free
One time one night in America

This is a right away letter, I’ve got to mail it today
Straight to my main inspirer, says ‘Urgent from the USA’
It’s got this heart inside it, the postage is my soul
Contains a message from millions, says ‘Keith don’t go’

Ten thousand guitars wailin’ but it ain’t quite the same
You’ve got a knack for sailin’
And it’s stamped with your own brand name
We’s all sailors, as captain you must know
You bring a message to millions, says ‘Keith don’t go’

I said Keith don’t go, don’t take my fun
Keith don’t go, Keith don’t go
We miss our father Jimi, it’s hard to breathe with that loss
But I still got you brother, don’t nail yourself to a cross
I watch you lead the pack, you put the drive into my soul
You bring a message to millions, says ‘Keith don’t go’

New Releases for the Week of September 11, 2015

Gary Clark Jr.: The Story of Sonny Boy Slim

Gary Clark Jr.:
The Story of Sonny Boy Slim

To sum up Gary Clark Jr. Is more challenging every day. He’s a musical universe unto himself, expanding at a nearly immeasurable rate, ever more hard to define – as a mind-blowing guitarist, a dazzling songwriter and engagingly soulful singer. He became the first artist ever recognized by the Recording Academy with Grammy Award nominations in both the rock and R&B categories for the same album in the same year, winning the latter: Best Traditional R&B Performance” – “Please Come Home” (from the album Blak And Blu). Rolling Stone dubbed Clark “The King of the Summer Festivals” as he captivated audiences from Coachella to Glastonbury, Lollapalooza to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, from Metallica’s Orion Festival to Jay-Z’s Made in America, and of course his hometown Austin City Limits Festival, where he his band set a daytime attendance record.

Slayer: Repentless

Slayer: Repentless

For more than three decades, Slayer’s onslaught has proven the band to be the supreme thrash-metal band on the planet. The two-time Grammy-winning band has also accumulated an abundance of Certified Gold Albums along with “Best…” awards from media outlets all over the world, including Kerrang!, SPIN, Metal Hammer, Revolver, and Esquire. Throughout Slayer’s history, the band has never faltered in unleashing it’s extreme and focused sonic assault, and, unlike many of it’s contemporaries who “commercialized” their sound, Slayer has remained crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.

Beirut: No No No

Beirut: No No No

the first collection of new material from Beirut since 2011’s well received Rip Tide. Coming four years after ‘The Rip Tide’, and recorded over a two week period during one of the coldest New York winters – with blizzard after blizzard raging outside – ‘No No No’ is Condon’s most vibrant and spirited record to date.

Shemekia Copeland: Outskirts of Love

Shemekia Copeland: Outskirts of Love

Shemekia returns to Alligator with a new release celebrating her continuing mastery of roots music styles from blues and soul to rock and Americana. ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons (guitar on a smoldering version of “Jesus Just Left Chicago”), Robert Randolph, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Will Kimbrough guest, but it’s Shemekia and her commanding vocals that dominate the performances on new original material, plus songs by John Fogerty, Albert King, Jesse Winchester, Jessie Mae Hemphill and her father, Johnny Copeland.

Chick Corea & Béla Fleck: Two

Chick Corea & Béla Fleck: Two

Two CD release. Chick Corea & Béla Fleck, two master songwriters, musicians, and band leaders, meet once again in an historic duet of piano and banjo. This live album combines Corea and Fleck’s classic tunes with the music from their Grammy-winning album The Enchantment! With a mix of jazz and pop standards, crossing a myriad of genres, from jazz, bluegrass, rock, flamenco and gospel, this album captures the casual, intimate playing by both legends from different musical worlds.

Shannon & the Clams: Gone by the Dawn

Shannon & the Clams:
Gone by the Dawn

the newest Shannon and the Clams album, is their best work to date. The music is complex, the lyrical content is emotionally raw and honest, and the production is the strangest it’s ever been. The album was written as one member was recovering from a serious breakup and another was deep in one. The lyrics reflect it, and the entire album is dripping with sadness, pain, and introspection. Gone By The Dawn was produced by Sonny Smith. .

Ben Folds: So There

Ben Folds: So There

Ben Folds music has taken another turn, firmly embracing strings and chamber music yet still maintaining a passion for his love of pop. So There will consist of eight chamber pop songs with the very talented yMusic Ensemble, a critically acclaimed classical sextet from New York who helped Ben bridge his pop/chamber rock songs with the concerto. In 2013, he composed “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” to critical acclaim. Since then, Ben has continued his global symphony performance quest , So There features that concerto along with a host of new songs that overlap pop and classical worlds with a fresh, exciting sound he has dubbed “chamber rock.”
