Jimi Hendrix Experience: Electric Church

Jimi Hendrix Experience:
Electric Church

Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church presents the legendary guitarist in full flight at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival before the largest US audience of his career. This critically acclaimed film combines color, 16mm multi-camera footage of Hendrix’s unforgettable July 4, 1970 concert in it’s original performance sequence together with a new documentary that traces his journey to the festival amidst the dark shadow of civil rights unrest, the unrelenting toll of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning festival culture that drew together young people across the country who were inspired by the Woodstock festival. The film details Hendrix’s integral role in drawing nearly 500, 000 people to his Electric Church- a dusty, scorching hot pecan orchard in Byron, Georgia some 100 miles south of Atlanta. Together with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Jimi skillfully blended favorites such as “Purple Haze, ” “All Along The Watchtower, ” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” with confident renditions of new songs such as “Freedom” and “Straight Ahead” that had not yet been released on album. She worries me so, mother-in-law,mother-in-law
If she leaves us alone, we would have a happy home

Harry Connick, Jr.: That Would Be Me

Harry Connick, Jr.:
That Would Be Me

For the first time in his career, Connick took a step outside his musical comfort zone to work in the studio with two “external” producers on this album – the acclaimed Eg White (Sam Smith, Adele, Florence And The Machine) and Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink, Weezer). That Would Be Me was recorded in London with White and Nashville with Walker. The result is a carefully crafted record full of surprises and stirring musical conjurations, delivering 11 new songs and new insights into his artistry. That Would Be Me includes infectious gems like the White-produced “(I Like It When You) Smile,” which includes an impromptu-hand clap and Connick serving up a one-of-a-kind-scat-rap-of-a-vocal that heats up mid-song and never let’s down. Walker-helmed songs include the percolating “(I Think I) Love U A Little Bit,” the sultry/funky “Songwriter” and the catchy first single “(I Do) Like We Do.”

Rod Stewart: Another Country

Stewart stated that “Batman Superman Spiderman” was written about bedtime stories that he would tell his youngest son, Aiden Patrick Stewart, based around the three fictional superheroes. The album’s title track, “Another Country” was inspired by Stewart’s respect for the armed forces – a respect influenced by his birth occurring shortly before the end of the Second World War – and consequent musing on life in the armed forces, particularly regarding the emotions generated by being apart from loved ones. Recording sessions for the album took place at Stewart’s home, and were produced with Pro Tools.

Joanna Newsom: Divers

Joanna Newsom: Divers

2015 release from the harpist, keyboardist, singer and songwriter. Divers is Newsom’s first album since 2010. Good heavens – five years go by – what can one do? Dive, listener, knowing that your next hour will be filled with diversions aplenty: a wheeling circuit of sci-fi sea-shanties and cavalier ballads, narrated from parts unknown; a family of polysemic song-sets; a paranomasaic Liederkreis of harmonic sympathies and knotted hierarchies; a fanfare of brazen puns and martial lullabies, blazing in sorrow and horseplay and love, in turns symphonic and spare, joined by Mellotrons and Marxophones and Moogs, clavichords and celestas and of course the harp, thrumming its threnodies of circadian invasions and avian irruptions and strange loops of Shepard-toned resonant-frequencies and something called goddamned Simulacreage. The music of Divers is a wonder of considered arrangements a taut line, threaded with the pearls of passed and passing times…a round, a chant, an incantation…a ray of light diverted eleven ways, into eleven songs that striate, in chromatic collusion, their simultaneous arc…a span that takes in lifetimes, but is immaculately sequenced for telescoped brevity. The music speeds with dissociative dread over montaged cityscapes; it hoofs with delight among the collaged quotations and sepia-toned codices of Popular Song; it ambles its carefree citational course through the public domain and down into the dustier corners of municipal parks, to lionize infamous airmen and anonymous Dutch Masters, to mourn pearl divers and Poorwills, and to elegize the ineluctable tragedy of relativity a tragedy of parochial time, anecdotal time, dubious time.

Dave Gahan & Soulsavers: Angels & Ghosts

Dave Gahan & Soulsavers:
Angels & Ghosts

2015 release from multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), along with musical partner Soulsavers. Entitled Angels & Ghosts, this is the collaborators’ second album, following their critically-acclaimed 2012 release The Light the Dead See. The album boasts nine original tracks, all written by Dave Gahan and Soulsavers. An evolution from their first album, Angels & Ghosts proves to be a markedly stronger and more hard-hitting body of work. Listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of dark, brooding sounds, elements inspired by gospel and blues, and the stark beauty that has become a signature of Dave and Soulsavers’ works. Dave Gahan’s emotionally powerful voice has never sounded better, and drives the album forward over a landscape of meticulously crafted instrumentation.

Elvis Costello: Unfaithful Music

Elvis Costello: Unfaithful Music

Walter Trout: Battle Scars

Walter Trout: Battle Scars

With bristling energy, unflagging virtuosity and lyrics that cut to the core of human hope and willpower, Walter Trout’s album, Battle Scars, chronicles his horrific battle with liver failure. But the 12-song set captures the international guitar hero, on a new high – playing and singing at the peak of his abilities, infusing even his darkest numbers with creative joy that sweeps like a beacon. Battle Scars is Trout’s 18th album released by the Netherlands-based Provogue label and his 42nd overall, counting his pre-solo-career recordings as a member of the historic groups: Canned Heat and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.

Tommy Castro & the Painkillers: Method to my Madness

Tommy Castro & the Painkillers:
Method to my Madness

Method To My Madness finds Tommy Castro And The Painkillers at their very best. It is instantly a career-defining highlight in a lifetime full of them. From the opening one-two punch of everyman anthems Common Ground and Shine A Light to the full-tilt energy of the title track to the searing, deep soul ballad Died And Gone To Heaven, Tommy and the band are firing on all cylinders. From the bayou rock of “Got A Lot” and the atmospheric, autobiographical “Ride” to the reinvented version of the Clarence Carter hit “I’m Qualified” and the emotional cover of B.B. King’s “Bad Luck”, Tommy Castro And The Painkillers continue to break new ground while simultaneously having an incredible amount of fun.

Shawn Mullins: My Stupid Heart

Shawn Mullins:
My Stupid Heart

Forging influences from folk and punk to jazz and Broadway musicals with pop-leaning melodic sensibilities, Shawn Mullins crafts memorable, affecting tunes that cross many genres on his all new album, My Stupid Heart. Throughout the record, the Grammy nominated, platinum selling artist, deftly balances songs of suffering – from the title tune and “Go and Fall,” to the powerful, yet subtle social commentary of “Ferguson” – with songs such as “Roll on By,” which strikes an upbeat note of hope.

Laurie Anderson: Heart of a Dog

The Nonesuch album is the full audio recording of the film, including all music and spoken text. Heart of a Dog has been shown at the Telluride, Venice, and Toronto Film Festivals to critical praise, with the New York Times calling it a “philosophically astute, emotionally charged meditation on death, love, art and dogs.”

It’s source is in the Appalachian foothills in a place called Maces Spring, Virginia. It was there that A.P. Carter, his wife Sara and his sister-in-law Maybelle began their careers as three of the earliest stars of country music. From their earliest days as Victor recording artists to their international success via the phenomenon of Border Radio, the Original Carter Family made their mark on the history of American recorded music. Beth Harrington’s documentary about this saga has played festivals and won awards and accolades across the globe. Omnivore Recordings, in conjunction with Harrington, is proud to present the soundtrack to this very important film: The Winding Stream-The Carters, The Cashes And The Course Of Country Music. With original tracks from the iconic Original Carter Family, through performances by legends George Jones and Johnny Cash, and into the present with John Prine and Rosanne Cash, The Winding Stream sends listeners on an audio journey through the history of the music we now know as “country,” how it came to be, and how it endures today. With liner notes from Harrington, pictures from the John Carter Cash archives, and mastering/restoration from multiple Grammy® winner Michael Graves (whose most recent win was for his work on Omnivore’s Hank Williams The Garden Spot Programs, 1950), this CD and Digital release is a must for those who know, who love and who want to learn more about this truly American musical genre, it’s origins and it’s legacy. Take a ride back to the future on The Winding Stream.

Taj Mahal & the Hula Blues Band: LIVE From Kauai

Taj Mahal & the Hula Blues Band:
LIVE From Kauai

two CD live release from the two-time Grammy winning folk/blues artist. February 6, 2015, Kauai, Hawaii: Under a 6000 sq. Ft. pavilion, Taj Mahal assembled a score of musicians next to lapping waves of the Pacific. Some were friends from the Hula Blues Band, others, jazz legends who, like himself, are at the top of their game. Two sold-out concerts packed with ecstatic audiences who swayed, danced and rocked out with that sweet, powerful aloha spirit brought yet another wonder. The acoustics of the open tent pitched there next to the ocean, created an extraordinary sound quality. The recordings were terrific! Two CDs are necessary to share the harmony of those events. So what will you hear? Taj’s powerful voice, old-school country blues with R&B, reggae, calypso, jazz riffs on vibes, steel and flute, rockin’ 12 strings and ukulele, four-part voice harmony, all Hawaiian laced.

Alison Brown: The Song of the Banjo

2015 album from the acclaimed Grammy-winning musician/composer/producer/entrepreneur. With The Song of the Banjo, her first album since 2009, Alison Brown plants another flag in her journey of musical exploration. As one of today’s finest progressive 5-string banjo players, the 2015 IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award/2014 United States Artist Fellowship recipient and Compass Records co-founder mixes seven masterful originals with six surprising covers of pop and rock classics from the ’70s and ’80s, boldly going where no banjo album has gone before. For their mission, Brown and her co-producer, husband, label co-founder and bassist Garry West have assembled an equally unconventional all-star ensemble, including Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, Keb’ Mo’, Colin Hay, uke master Jake Shimabukuro, legendary studio drummer Steve Gadd, fiddler Stuart Duncan, Irish phenom guitarist John Doyle, bassist Todd Phillips, guitarist Jim Oblon, Dobro player Rob Ickes and pianists Will Barrow, Joe Davidian and John Jarvis. Combining stunning virtuosity and unerring taste, Brown, with her signature model Prucha banjo creates a roots rainbow of folk, jazz, pop, Celtic, classical, Latin and Americana. EP from the alt-rock/indie favorites. Florasongs is a collection of rare and unreleased tracks from the sessions that produced their acclaimed seventh studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, which came out in January, 2015. In its lyrics, the band eschews the introspection common to modern rock, instead favoring a storytelling approach, as evidenced in many songs in their catalog. As captured on “Singin’ to Strangers” and the donkey gazing at the carrot on the album’s cover, Paradise explores the paradox of longing, desire and the ways in which the pursuit of fulfillment can keep it perpetually out of our reach. The desire for connection is clear on the album from “Touch Of Your Hand” – a song about what Chris describes as “the most basic human need that there is”- to “Two Places” – a track about longing for home and family while on the road – to “Never And Always,” which examines the fundamental emotional experiences of loneliness and belonging.

Sevendust: Kill the Flaw

Sevendust: Kill the Flaw

You don’t have to change everything. However, realigning can be the healthiest remedy after nearly two decades in the music business. Going into their eleventh full-length album, Kill The Flaw, Sevendust changed a lot around them regarding the infrastructure of their organization, but they didn’t alter what matters the most-the music. Following their first significant break (two months) since forming, the Atlanta group-Lajon Witherspoon [lead vocals], Clint lowery [lead guitar, backing vocals], John Connolly [rhythm guitar, backing vocals], Vince Hornsby [bass], and Morgan Rose [drums]-entered their new creative hub, Architekt Studios in Butler, New Jersey, completely inspired and invigorated. The first single and album opener “Thank You” upholds the pillars of their signature style with a buoyant guitar groove, bombastic drums, and soulfully striking refrain. “There’s always someone trying to keep you down,” sighs Lajon. “At the end of the day, that negativity makes you stronger. You’re still going. It says, ‘Thank you for putting me down. Thank you for making me work harder. Thank you for hating!'” Thankfully, they’re still Sevendust through and through, and that’s what forged one of hard rock’s most diehard audiences.
