A few years back, my pals from the band Old Jawbone asked me to play a couple of songs at a Bob Dylan tribute concert at Hopmonk, Sebastopol.
I dusted off my version of “Hazel”, a fairly obscure song from the Planet Waves album. I have this policy, actually more of a superstition, that it’s better for me to perform lesser known songs, rather than ones people have heard a hundred times.
Also on the bill was a young fella named David Luning. I knew about him from my friend Paulette (David’s Aunt) , so David and I chatted it up before the show.
I asked him what Bob Dylan song he was going to play. “Just Like a Woman”, he replied.
“Great song” I say, but I worried to myself that a misfire would leave the audience wanting to hear Bob’s version.
When David’s turn came, he sat at his piano and absolutely nailed “Just Like a Woman”, singing it like it had been in his repertoire for years.
A classic song reimagined, and made to sound like his own. Boom.
Today, David’s new CD, Restless has dropped. It’s his sophomore release, but his first on Blue Rose Music, a philanthropic record label that exists to promote the arts, and support good causes. The new album is produced by Karl Derfler, an extremely talented recording engineer who is the go-to soundman to HUGElarge and Tom Waits. David’s band is so good, and the songs are so well crafted- I suggest that you buy one today. From us!.
Then take it to Petaluma on Saturday night and have it autographed.
David Luning & Band CD Release Party is Saturday Feb 4 at 8pm at The Mystic Theater
Other New Releases for February 3, 2017 :
Beth Hart: Fire on the Floor
Beth Hart is on fire. Right now, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. In 2016, the headline news is Fire On The Floor: a release that even this fiercely self-critical artist describes as “pretty frickin’ good”. Fire On The Floor is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there’s a theme that ties these 12 songs together, it’s a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. “We were still in the mixing stages for that album and I knew I had to make another record. Making Better Than Home was so painful, because one of the producers, Michael Stevens, was dying of cancer. It was a very emotional record to write and to make. I wanted the songs for Fire On The Floor to get born real quick.” Beth Hart Fun Fact: She was a winner on Ed McMahon’s Star Search. Hi-Oh!
Surfer Blood: Snowdonia
SURFER BLOOD are a young indie-rock band, and their fourth album, Snowdonia, is their most ambitious effort yet. Overcoming adversity, the band has artistically grown and thrived. Following the departure of bassist Kevin Williams and guitarist Thomas Fekete (tragically lost to cancer in May), singer/guitarist John Paul Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz have rebuilt a talented lineup with guitarist Michael McCleary and bassist Lindsey Mills, all four alumni of the same high school in West Palm Beach, Florida. Pitts wrote specifically with the new band’s talents in mind: “When I was writing I was thinking more about background vocals and harmonies. Lindsey and Michael are great singers, and I really wanted that to show in the songs. There are layers of vocals on almost every track, and the call-and-response parts between Lindsey and I are something totally new.” Along with plenty of Surfer Blood’s signature hooks, the band concocted some epic and more complex songs with enormous attention to sonic detail. Pitts wrote and mixed the album alone, for the first time since their debut Astro Coast. The immediacy is intoxicating and the musical and lyrical results are fantastic. Surfer Blood get better and better with each album, and we’re sure they’ll be making great records for years to come.
Wyclef Jean: J’ouvert
J’ouvert is a precursor to Wyclef’s forthcoming full length album aptly titled Carnival III: Road To Clefication dropping on the 20th anniversary of Wyclef’s critically acclaimed debut The Carnival. Wyclef is known for his wealth of musical influences from jazz to classic rock to reggae. With his critically acclaimed, Grammy nominated debut The Carnival, he launched himself as a producer and solo artist whose work drew from elements of pop, country, folk, disco, Latin, and electronic music. As a solo artist, Wyclef Jean has released six albums that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide, including 1997’s The Carnival and 2000’s The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book.
LeAnn Rimes: Remnants
the 16th studio album from the world-renowned vocal powerhouse, internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter and the artist who debuted as the youngest Grammy-award recipient of all time. At a young 33 years old, LeAnn, is already a global phenomenon with over 44 million albums sold worldwide, two Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, two World Music Awards, three Academy of Country Music Awards, one Country Music Association Award and one Dove Award. On Remnants, LeAnn reaches back into her Mississippi-born soul and truthfully delivers piece-by-piece who she is now as a woman: a wife, a stepmother, a daughter, a friend, an artist, a songwriter and a survivor
Ralph Towner: My Foolish Heart
12 songs played solo on classical nylon string, and 12 string guitar from legendary jazz guitarist.
Judas Priest: Turbo 30
Digitally remastered and expanded triple CD edition of the metal band’s 10th studio album, released to coincide with the album’s 30th Anniversary. Includes two bonus discs that feature the audio from the show Live At The Kemper Arena, Kansas City. Turbo is the 1986 studio album by Judas Priest, recorded in June – November 1985 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas and mixed in January and February 1986, at Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles, California. Turbo was first released by Columbia on 14 April 1986. The album marked the band’s first use of guitar synthesizers. Turbo was an instant commercial success. The album reached #33 in the UK and #17 on Billboard 200, marking the apex of Priest’s commercial success and being the band´s highest chart position until 2005´s Angel of Retribution.
Black Sabbath: The Ultimate Collection 2 CD set
The Ultimate Collection is curated in conjunction with the band. The 31-track collection features the Black Sabbath’s classic songs including ‘Paranoid’, ‘Iron Man’, ‘War Pigs’, ‘N.I.B’. and ‘The Wizard’ as well as choice cuts from their classic albums. Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham in 1968, by guitarist and main songwriter Tony Iommi, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward. The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with guitarist Iommi being the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed as a blues rock band, the group soon adopted the Black Sabbath moniker and began incorporating occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Despite an association with these two themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war.
